Thailand's cool season officially runs from mid-October to mid-February (Thai government). It is the time most visitors pick for Bangkok, and the floating markets fill up to match.
The Thai Meteorological Department published its outlook for winter 2026-27 on 15 October. Below is what it says, which dates bring the biggest crowds, and how to time Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa around them.
The quick answer
TMD expects the cool season to start in the third week of October 2026, about a week late, and to last until around mid-February 2027, warmer than normal with Bangkok lows of 19 to 21°C. The busiest stretches are the long New Year weekend (31 December to 3 January) and Chinese New Year on Saturday 6 February 2027. Take the earliest departure, go on a weekday if you can, and expect fewer fireflies at Amphawa than in the rainy season.

When is the cool season in 2026-27, and what will the weather be like?
From the third week of October 2026 to about mid-February 2027. Warmer than usual, mostly dry in the central region, with the coolest mornings from late December to early February.
TMD says upper Thailand enters the cool season about a week later than average this year, and El Niño, expected to strengthen towards the end of 2026, should keep it mild: average lows across upper Thailand of 22 to 23°C, about 2°C above normal, and 19 to 21°C in Bangkok (Khaosod English). Bangkok and the central region can still see thunderstorms over 20 to 30% of the area until mid-November, and early mornings from mid-November may bring dense fog (Nation Thailand).
For a morning market that is good news. Cooler air at 7am, little rain, and soft light until the haze burns off. The month-by-month picture:
| Period | Weather (central Thailand) | Damnoen Saduak | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late Oct to mid Nov | Cool season begins, some thunderstorms, flood water draining | Check the flood news; crowds still moderate | Good if the canal is back to normal |
| Mid Nov to mid Dec | Dry, cooler mornings, possible fog | Busy, coaches daily | Our pick: comfort without the holiday rush |
| Late Dec to early Jan | Coolest stretch begins | Peak crowds, long New Year weekend | Weekday, 06:30 start, or skip |
| Mid Jan to early Feb | Coolest mornings | Busy; Chinese New Year 6 Feb | Good on weekdays outside 5 to 7 Feb |
| Mid Feb onward | Hot season starts | Crowds ease, heat builds | Be on the canal by 8am |
How busy are Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year at the floating markets?
Very. The cool season is peak season, and the New Year long weekend and Chinese New Year add Thai and regional visitors on top of the tour coaches.
IDC Travel calls the cool season the peak at Damnoen Saduak, with the thinner crowds in June to October (IDC Travel). Thai public holidays add domestic day-trippers, and they hit the weekend markets, Amphawa above all, hardest. Christmas is not a Thai holiday, so 24 and 25 December are ordinary working days, busy with foreign visitors only.
Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027. It is not a national public holiday in Thailand, only in four southern provinces (Office Holidays), but it is a big travel weekend for visitors from China and the rest of the region.
| Date | Occasion | Effect on the markets |
|---|---|---|
| Fri 23 Oct 2026 | King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day (holiday) | Long weekend: busy Amphawa |
| Sat 5 Dec, Mon 7 Dec 2026 | King's Birthday / Father's Day, holiday moved to Monday | Long weekend: busy Amphawa |
| Thu 10 Dec 2026 | Constitution Day (holiday) | Busier than a normal Thursday |
| 24 to 25 Dec 2026 | Christmas (not a Thai holiday) | Foreign visitor peak |
| Thu 31 Dec 2026 to Sun 3 Jan 2027 | New Year's Eve and New Year's Day | The busiest stretch of the season |
| Sat 6 Feb 2027 | Chinese New Year (regional holiday only) | Busy weekend, regional visitors |
| Sat 20 to Mon 22 Feb 2027 | Makha Bucha long weekend | Just after the cool season, busy Amphawa |
Holiday dates from HR Online (2026) and Time Out Bangkok (2027).
Which departure should you pick in the cool season?
The earliest one. Cool-season crowds peak with the coaches from about 08:00 to 10:00, and the cooler air makes the early start easy.
The cool weather does not change the rule; it removes the excuse. Vendors are busiest from 07:00 to 09:00, the coaches arrive from 08:00, and most food boats have left by 11:00. In peak season the gap between a 06:30 departure and a 10:30 one is the gap between a canal of boats and a canal of tour groups. Skip the late departures from December to February.
Our pick for this season is the small-group tour with brunch: nine guests at most, about two hours at the floating market, a motor or a paddle boat as you prefer, and Thai snacks along the way. Two hours matters when the canal is crowded, because you can wait out a coach. On a budget, the classic day trip at 06:30 is the budget choice and does the job, with about 1.5 hours at the market.

Nine guests at most, about two hours at the floating market and Thai snacks along the way. The best way to beat peak-season crowds without a private tour.
Explore the small-group tour with brunch Tour detailsIs Amphawa worth it on cool-season weekends, and what about the fireflies?
Yes for the evening market, less so for the fireflies. They are most active in the rainy season, May to October, so expect fewer in December and January.
Amphawa runs Friday to Sunday, roughly 15:00 to 22:00 (Wikipedia), and cool-season evenings on the canal steps are a pleasure. Wikipedia gives May to October as the best firefly season, and Your Thai Guide says the insects are around all year but more active in the rains, with boats leaving about an hour after sundown (Your Thai Guide). Pick a moonless night if you can.
Watch the long weekends in the table above: Thai families come in force, and transport back to Bangkok after 20:00 is scarce. Samut Songkhram, Amphawa's province, still had flooding in three districts on 14 October (Localplus), so check before an October or early November trip. The full comparison is in Amphawa vs Damnoen Saduak.

Weekend evenings only: the Maeklong train, Amphawa and a firefly boat, nine guests at most.
Check dates for the Amphawa weekend tripIs the cool season the best time to visit Damnoen Saduak?
For comfort, yes. For crowds, no. Mid-November to mid-December on a weekday morning is the sweet spot.
Heat is the enemy from March to May, when it can pass 35°C by mid-morning; rain and, this year, flooding are the risk from June to October. The cool season fixes both and fills the canal instead. We would rather share the canal at 7:30 in December than have it to ourselves at 11:00 in April. The markets in every season are covered in our opening hours guide.
What has changed for visitors this year?
The market itself has not changed its rules: entry is still free. The changes are around it: the floods, a late and warm cool season, a new river boat timetable and contactless payment on the MRT.
- The 2026 floods. Damnoen Saduak district was under flood warnings from late September; details in our floods post.
- A late, warm winter. TMD expects the cool season a week late and about 2°C warmer than normal (Khaosod English).
- River boats. The orange flag Chao Phraya boat now runs only at weekday rush hours; see our river boats post.
- Contactless rail. The MRT dropped its old cards on 1 June 2026, and a rail fare cap is planned for 1 January 2027.
- Closing time. Lorenzigo reports that closing around 1pm has become stricter (Lorenzigo). Another reason not to book the 10:30 departure.
Not changed: a fair boat price is still charged per boat, for the whole boat, by the hour, and the pier about 1 km out quoting inflated per-person prices is still the one to walk past.
