Maeklong and Damnoen Saduak

Eight times a day a train eases through a fish and vegetable market while the vendors fold their awnings back with inches to spare. Twenty kilometres away the boats are selling mangoes. Most day trips do both; here is how to get the timing right.

Maeklong Railway Market, Talat Rom Hup or the "umbrella pulldown market", grew along the last stretch of track into Maeklong station in Samut Songkhram. It is a working seafood and vegetable market. When a train is due, the stalls pull back their awnings and slide the trays clear, the train creeps through, and everything goes back (Wikipedia).

Damnoen Saduak is about 20 km away, a 15 to 20-minute drive. That short gap is why nearly every floating market tour adds the train market. The trick is being on the canal early and at the tracks when a train is due.

The quick answer

Trains arrive at Maeklong at 08:30, 11:10, 14:30 and 17:40, and leave at 06:20, 09:00, 11:30 and 15:30, so a train passes through the market eight times a day. Tours with an early start usually do the train market first, around 08:30, then the floating market. The TRIPZA tours, group or private, are the ones built around riding the local train into the market. Trains run late; confirm the times on the day.

What are the Maeklong train times in 2026?

Arrivals at 08:30, 11:10, 14:30 and 17:40; departures at 06:20, 09:00, 11:30 and 15:30. Every one passes through the market.

Times from Thaiest (updated October 2026) and train36, which list the same schedule. The Ban Laem to Maeklong section runs only four trains each way a day (Wikipedia), and late running is normal. Check on the day at the station or with the State Railway of Thailand, get to the tracks 15 minutes early and stand where the vendors tell you.

Which order do combo tours visit the two markets?

Early departures usually go to the train market first for the 08:30 arrival, then the floating market. Late-morning departures flip the order or reach the canal around midday.

  • Damnoen Saduak and Maeklong: the itinerary runs Maeklong for 1.5 hours, then Damnoen Saduak for 1.5 hours. On the 06:30 departure from River City you are at the tracks for the morning trains and on the canal by about 10:00. The 09:00 and 10:30 departures reach the floating market around midday or later, as the food boats head home.
  • Floating and train market: the 06:30 and 08:30 departures ride the train first; the 10:00 departure reverses the order.
  • Railway and Lao Tuk Luck: hotel pickup from 06:00 to 07:00, Maeklong first, then Damnoen Saduak and Lao Tuk Luck.
  • Floating market and Ayutthaya: 45 minutes at Maeklong, 1.5 hours on the canal, then lunch and the temples.
  • Small group with brunch: a street food tasting at Maeklong, then 2 hours at Damnoen Saduak.

Our view: take the earliest departure of whatever you book. Skip the 10:30 classic departure if the floating market is the point.

The earliest start gets both markets at their best: the classic day trip leaves River City at 06:30.

Which tour rides the Maeklong train?

The TRIPZA tours: the budget group tour and its private version both include about an hour on the local train into the market. On most others you watch it pass from the tracks.

The floating and train market tour and the private version put you on the local train through the countryside and into Maeklong station, then give you about an hour in the market. On the classic tour the stop is planned around a train coming through, and its itinerary also lists a short train ride. The Lao Tuk Luck tour and the Ayutthaya day give you time in the market to watch it pass.

Watching makes the better photo. Riding makes the better story: from inside, the awnings fold back past the window a hand's width away. Vinicius, on the budget tour in October 2026: "Wonderful experience! The floating market and train market tour was amazing!"

Can you do Maeklong and Damnoen Saduak on your own?

Yes, by minivan and songthaew. The easy order is Damnoen Saduak first, from about 08:00, then Maeklong for the 11:10 arrival.

Take the 06:00 minivan 996 from the Southern Bus Terminal to Damnoen Saduak, spend 08:00 to 10:30 on the canal, then a songthaew or taxi 20 km to Maeklong for the 11:10 arrival and the 11:30 departure. Lorenzigo recommends the same pairing (Lorenzigo). Vans back to Bangkok leave from Maeklong (train36).

Riding the whole line from Bangkok is a different day: Wongwian Yai to Maha Chai by train (about an hour), the short ferry across the Tha Chin river, then Ban Laem to Maeklong (about an hour), per Thaiest. It is slow and fun, and it leaves little morning for the floating market. Bus details are in Bangkok to Damnoen Saduak.

What should you know before the train comes?

Stand behind the vendors' line, keep bags and elbows in, and hold children's hands. The train passes centimetres from the awnings.

  • Where to stand: wherever the stallholders point. They know where the carriages clear.
  • When to arrive: 15 minutes before the train. Late trains are common, and the first warning is the awnings starting to fold.
  • What it is: a working fresh seafood market (Wikipedia), not a show. Buy fruit or a snack; the fish is for locals.
  • Late afternoon: Maeklong's vendors start closing after about 3pm (Phuket101), so the 14:30 and 15:30 trains run through a thinner market.

Is it worth adding the train market to Damnoen Saduak?

Yes. It is 20 minutes away, free to visit, and the train is through in minutes, so it fits around the floating market without eating the morning.

The case against: on a combo tour the floating market gets 45 minutes to 1.5 hours instead of a full morning. If the canal is what you came for, the private paddle boat tour is the Damnoen-only option: a palm sugar house, a paddle boat through small canals, then two hours at the market, back by about 14:00.

The other pairing is Maeklong with Amphawa: the train market, then Amphawa's evening market and a firefly boat, Friday to Sunday only. Compared in Amphawa vs Damnoen Saduak.

What if the train is late, or you miss it?

You wait or move on. Tours time the stop around one train, and if traffic or the train runs late, some groups see the market without it.

The small-group brunch listing says so itself: the train may be missed if traffic holds up the van. With four trains each way on the Ban Laem section, the next one can be hours away. If seeing the train is the reason you book, take the earliest departure and pick a tour built around the ride, such as the floating and train market tour.

Expect the train to be busy with visitors at the 08:30 and 11:10 arrivals. That is when most tours are there.
