Damnoen Saduak boat rides

The market is free. The boat is what everyone sells you, and the deal you get depends on where you stand when you ask. Here is how a fair ride works, and how to get one.

A boat ride at Damnoen Saduak is optional. Walkways line the main canal and you can see a lot from the bank. Most people still want an hour on the water, and that hour is where the touts work.

What follows comes from an operator's own boat menu, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and recent 2025-26 reports, gathered in October 2026.

The quick answer

Boats are hired per boat, by the hour, for the whole boat of 4 to 8 people: a paddle boat for the market itself, a longtail for the side canals and orchards. Agree the price, the time and the route before you step in. A per-person quote at a pier about 1 km before the market is the scam. Entry is free and the boat is optional. Every day tour sold on this site already includes a boat.

How do boat rides at Damnoen Saduak work?

You hire a whole boat for a set time, usually 30 minutes to an hour for a paddle boat and 1 to 2 hours for a longtail. The rower or driver takes you round the main canal, and the side canals if you ask.

Every fair pier works the same way: one price for the boat, a fixed length of ride, and a loop you agree before you sit down. Yuwanda Pier is the one the Tourism Authority of Thailand points visitors to (Go Asia). The choices, side by side:

Boat sizes and ride lengths from Go Asia, Lorenzigo, Thaiest and machupicchu.org; the electric boats from the Thai Government PR Department. A 2014 provincial regulation set official hourly rates for both boat types (Khaosod English), and some piers still quote the old motorboat rate. Steep, but per boat. The same figure per person is not a price. It is a con.

Paddle boat or longtail: which should you take?

A paddle boat for the market itself; a longtail if you want the side canals and orchards in the same hour.

  • A paddle boat (rowing boat): a rower at the back, 4 to 5 passengers, moving at market pace, so the vendors can hook your boat and sell. One hour covers the main market (Thaiest).
  • A motor longtail: a car engine on a long propeller shaft, 6 to 8 passengers, fast and loud. It shines on longer runs out past stilt houses and orchards, and costs more per hour. Inside the market it sits in the same jam as everyone else.

Our pick: a paddle boat for one hour. If your tour brought you in on a longtail, hire a paddle boat for 30 minutes inside, or just walk.

From a paddle boat, the fruit boats come to you.

Is the boat price per boat or per person?

Per boat, at every fair pier. A quote per person is the first sign you are at the wrong pier.

A paddle boat takes 4 to 5 people and a longtail 6 to 8, and the hourly price is for the whole boat: YingGolf, an operator that takes bookings ahead, charges the same for one passenger or five (Go Asia). Couples and solo travellers pay the full boat price, or share.

Ask three things before you sit down: per boat or per person, for how long, and where it goes. Agree the price out loud, type it into your phone and show it back. In Thai, tao rai tor lam? means "how much per boat?"

How do you spot the Damnoen Saduak boat scam?

A pier about 1 km before the market where taxis and vans drop you, staff claim a boat is the only way in, and the ride is priced per person at many times the fair rate.

Tourist Bangkok describes staff in purple shirts at that pier quoting inflated per-person prices for an hour, and taxi drivers who earn a commission on each sale (Tourist Bangkok). Thaiest got the same treatment at the drop-off square where its minivan stopped (Thaiest). The signs are always the same:

  • The wrong place: you are dropped by a car park or a pier with no market in sight, and told this is the entrance.
  • The wrong unit: the price is per person, not per boat.
  • The fake rules: "official" price boards on the access road, or someone selling an entry ticket. Entry is free.
  • The pressure: staff say the walk is too far or the market is closed. It is about 15 minutes on foot.

Say no and walk: turn left out of the pier entrance and follow the road to the market, or take a motorbike taxi for the last stretch.

Where should you hire a boat at Damnoen Saduak?

At the stalls by the main bridge or inside the market itself, not at a pier on the access road. Or book ahead and arrive with the boat sorted.

  • The main bridge: the stalls by the bridge over the main canal, and the piers inside the market, give fairer deals than anything on the road in.
  • Yuwanda Pier: the pier the Tourism Authority of Thailand lists for paddle boats and longtails (Go Asia).
  • Booked ahead: YingGolf takes bookings for paddle boats and longtails, and the pre-booked longtail leaves from Wandee Pier.
  • Bring cash: almost no boat operators or vendors take cards or QR payment (Lorenzigo). Small notes help.
  • Shop stops: some boats pull in at a souvenir shop labelled "sugar palm farm" (Thaiest). If you don't want it, say so when you agree the price.
  • Tips: not expected. If the rower took you where you asked, a small tip is welcome.

Can you share a boat?

Yes. Shared seats are sold per person on boats that leave when they fill up, which suits solo travellers. For two or more, a whole paddle boat is usually the better deal.

Machupicchu.org and Lorenzigo both report shared boats at the main piers. Tourist Bangkok was quoted a shared-seat price close to the private price for two, so check before you agree. A shared boat follows the boatman's loop, not yours, and waits until it is full.

Sharing suits solo travellers. Two people pay about the same for a private paddle boat, and it goes where you ask.

Travelling solo? The budget tour puts you on a 45-minute longtail with the group, boat already paid.

What do the tours include for the boat?

Every day trip on this site includes a boat ride, but the type and length differ, and two leave a second boat to you.

Is the pre-booked longtail ride worth it?

For independent travellers in pairs, yes. It is sold per person, so groups of four or more usually do better hiring a whole boat on the spot.

The longtail boat ride is the only product here that is just the boat. You get yourself to Wandee Pier (GPS 13.5209, 99.9661, about 800 m east of the main market), show your booking number and ride a longtail into the market for about 40 minutes. Because the price is per person, two of you pay about what an hour's longtail hire costs at a fair pier. Four of you pay more than a whole boat would.

What you buy is certainty: a fixed price, booked ahead, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If the bus drops you among touts, that is worth something. The bus routes are in Bangkok to Damnoen Saduak.

Frequently asked questions

Is a boat ride compulsory at Damnoen Saduak?

No. Entry is free and walkways run along the canal. Anyone who says a boat is the only way in is selling one.

How long should a boat ride at Damnoen Saduak be?

One hour is enough for the main market by paddle boat. Take two hours on a longtail only if you want the orchards and side canals too.

Can I pay for the boat by card?

Rarely. Almost no boat operators or vendors take cards or digital payment, so bring cash in small notes.

How does the electric boat to Lao Tuk Luck work?

A community enterprise hires out electric longtails by the hour for up to four people, from Wat Cho pier, 07:00 to 14:00 daily. It goes to the older Lao Tuk Luck market, not the main Damnoen Saduak market.
