Amphawa or Damnoen Saduak?

One is a morning market of boats selling fruit and noodles. The other wakes up on Friday afternoon and fills the canal steps with grilled prawns. They are 25 km apart and suit different days.

Amphawa on a weekend evening: seafood grilled on the boats, eaten on the steps.

Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa are the two big floating markets southwest of Bangkok, and people treat them as rivals. They aren't, really. Damnoen Saduak trades every morning, with fruit and cooked food sold straight from boats. Amphawa is a riverside town in Samut Songkhram whose market runs Friday to Sunday, afternoon into evening, mostly from shophouses and the canal steps; the Tourism Authority of Thailand frames it as the sunset market (TAT).

Lorenzigo calls Amphawa the alternative most Thai visitors go to. Damnoen Saduak is the one on the postcards. Which is better depends on your day of the week and your appetite.

The quick answer

Pick Damnoen Saduak for the boat-market scene, any day, early. Pick Amphawa for a relaxed Friday to Sunday evening with seafood and a firefly boat. The closest floating markets to Bangkok are Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom, inside the city at weekends. Tha Kha is the smallest and most local, on set lunar days and recently at weekends. ICONSIAM's SookSiam is an indoor, recreated floating market, open daily 10:00 to 22:00.

What is the difference between Amphawa and Damnoen Saduak?

Damnoen Saduak is a daily morning market on the water; Amphawa is a Friday to Sunday afternoon and evening market along the canal, with more seafood and fewer coach groups.

Which floating market is best near Bangkok?

For a first visit, Damnoen Saduak, early. For atmosphere and food, Amphawa on a weekend evening. For a short trip from the city, Khlong Lat Mayom.

It depends on the day you have free. Monday to Thursday, it is Damnoen Saduak or nothing outside the city, because Amphawa doesn't run. On a Saturday you can choose, and then the question is morning or evening.

  • Damnoen Saduak if you want the boats, the hats and the photo.
  • Amphawa if you would rather eat than shop, hate early starts and want fireflies.
  • Tha Kha if you want a small market where locals buy vegetables, and your date fits.
  • Khlong Lat Mayom and Taling Chan if you have half a day and no wish for a 2-hour drive.

What is Amphawa like, and when should you go?

A canal town that fills up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Go after 15:00, eat on the steps, and take a firefly boat after dark.

Wikipedia lists the market at 15:00 to 22:00; Click2Go puts the peak at 4 to 8pm, and Thailand Highlights warns that many stalls aren't open before 3pm (Thailand Highlights). Wat Amphawa Chetiyaram stands next to the market. Firefly boats sell seats per person or charter by the boat, and Wikipedia gives May to October as the best season. A guest on the Amphawa day trip in June 2026: "You will see a lot of fireflies during the rain season."

Getting back is the hard part. Rides to Bangkok after 8pm are scarce, so arrange the return before you go. Minivan 996 from the Southern Bus Terminal stops at Amphawa on its way to Damnoen Saduak.

Can you visit Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa on the same day?

Yes, on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday: Damnoen Saduak in the morning, Maeklong at midday, Amphawa from 15:00. It makes a day of 12 hours or more.

The two markets are about 25 km apart (Love Thailand). On your own: the 06:00 van to Damnoen Saduak, the 11:10 train at Maeklong, a late lunch, then Amphawa as the stalls open. For all three, hire a car and driver for the day; the vans manage two.

No tour on this site does all three. The classic day trip covers Maeklong and Damnoen Saduak; the Amphawa trip covers Maeklong and Amphawa. On a weekend you could take one and save the other for the next day.

Which is the closest floating market to Bangkok?

Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom, both inside Bangkok on the Thonburi side, about 5 km apart, and both open at weekends.

  • Taling Chan: on Khlong Chak Phra in front of the Taling Chan district office, weekends roughly 08:30 to 16:00, trading since 1987 (Wikipedia). Most of it is on land, with a small canal section (Thailand Highlights). A taxi from the centre takes 20 to 30 minutes (AirAsia).
  • Khlong Lat Mayom: on Bang Ramat Road, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, open since 2004. Wikipedia lists 09:00 to 17:00, the Thai government 09:00 to 15:00 (Wikipedia). More food than Taling Chan, and optional boat rides.
  • Bang Nam Phueng: weekends in the green Bang Kachao area of Samut Prakan, 30 to 40 minutes by taxi.

None comes close to Damnoen Saduak's scale on the water. They suit a weekend morning without a 6am alarm.

When is Tha Kha floating market open?

On the 2nd, 7th and 12th days of the waxing and waning moon, 06:00 to noon, and recent guides add Saturday and Sunday mornings. Check a Thai lunar calendar before you go.

Wikipedia lists only the lunar days (Wikipedia); Thai Holiday Guide and Phuket101 say it now opens every weekend too, roughly 06:00 to 14:00. The lunar dates shift each month, so they rarely land on a weekend. Tha Kha is about 6 km from Amphawa in Samut Songkhram, small, and sells mostly vegetables, fruit and Thai food. There is no ATM and no card payment on the water: bring small notes.

No tour on this site goes there. Take a car or taxi from Amphawa, about 15 minutes.

Tha Kha is the small, local version: fruit, vegetables and a few cooking boats.

Is there a floating market in a Bangkok mall?

Yes: SookSiam on the ground floor of ICONSIAM, an indoor recreated floating market with food and crafts from all 77 provinces, open daily 10:00 to 22:00.

The boats at SookSiam don't go anywhere. It is a set of about 15,000 square metres with more than 3,000 stalls, and the food stalls mostly take a stored-value card you top up (Phuket101). It is air-conditioned, open every day, and reached by the BTS Gold Line to Charoen Nakhon station, which connects to the mall (IDC Travel).

Good for a rainy afternoon or a first taste of regional food. As a floating market, it is a stage set.

Which should you book: Amphawa or Damnoen Saduak?

Damnoen Saduak if you have a weekday or only a morning; Amphawa if you have a weekend evening and care more about food than boats.

Remember the honest bit: at Damnoen Saduak the market is free and the boat is what you pay for. How to hire one fairly is in the boat ride guide.
