Bigcountry Experience · River City, Bangkok

Two markets and three temples in one day

A coach from River City covers the Maeklong train market and Damnoen Saduak in the morning, then drives two hours north to the ruined temples of Ayutthaya. Pick it if you only have one day for trips out of Bangkok and want the markets and the old capital both.

Floating Market & Ayutthaya Day Tour

About this experience

This is the long one: 12 hours, about five of them on a coach. You meet at The Coffee Club at River City (or choose pickup), drive 90 minutes to Maeklong for 45 minutes on the tracks, then 30 minutes on to Damnoen Saduak, where you arrive by a paddle boat and get about 1.5 hours with free time. Then it's a two-hour drive north to Ayutthaya, the old capital, for lunch and three temples: Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, Wat Maha That (the Buddha head in the tree roots) and Wat Lokaya Sutha with its reclining Buddha.

Watch the option you book. Lunch, temple entry and hotel pickup are included only if the option you select says so; on the base price the itinerary marks lunch and all three temples as extra fees. The heritage site Ayutthaya History lists a foreigner entry fee at Wat Phra Sri Sanphet and Wat Maha That. The river prawn lunch is extra on every option.

Is it worth it? For people with one free day, yes. For the floating market, less so: 1.5 hours fits, but you'll spend more time on the highway than at either market. If you have two days, do the markets one morning and Ayutthaya another.

  • Carry cash for temple entry if it is not in your option, plus snacks at the markets.
  • Pack water and sunscreen. Ayutthaya's ruins are open to the sun at midday.
